Natural Creativity

Posted by James M. Helms on June 22, 2007

I think all too often we are taught to live by a pre-defined model. Some of you may have heard “stay within the lines, the lines are your friend”. This of course is a great life lesson when it comes to driving yet it should not be applied to every facet of our life. Creative thinking and skills are so valuable, I wish that I had been encouraged more to develop mine.

Watching my eight year old son diligently learn how to write his first webpage is very rewarding. He doesn’t want to learn web design so that he can conform to the strict rules of “xhtml1-strict.dtd”. He is wanting to learn because he can see that I am learning. He can see that it is a creative outlet and he wants to display his thoughts, art and interests to the world. I am really impressed, he is my inspiration as I watch him work tirelessly editing his own wrapper in Microsoft Paint and experimenting with colors.

I have pasted a quote from Plutarch on my website that says “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled”. To me, this quote says it all. My son is a brilliant kid that only needs to be encouraged in his creativity. The result of which will strengthen him.

In my current situation I have an idea and it is daunting. Yet I realize that with a little creativity even the most enormous undertaking is possible. I am challenged to overcome obstacles that stand in my way and I need creativity to make it happen. Natural creativity is many times hindered by strict models. Though models have their proper application, they can hinder us just as much as help.

The value of great information

Posted by James M. Helms on June 22, 2007

It is evident that the internet is going to be around for awhile. It is also evident that the longer the internet exists it will continue to evolve. I first heard of the internet in the early 1990’s. Of course during those days I didn’t use the internet. My understanding of the internet was limited to an abstract view of a spider’s web that connected computers like telephone lines connected phones. While the idea was novel to me I didn’t place any greater significance on the internet than I did on the computer game “The Oregon Trail” that I played during second grade. Like many people still today I obtained most of my information from word of mouth. I didn’t read or watch the news (most of my early life we didn’t even have a T.V.). Lord only knows that I didn’t really learn to much in class either, but that is beside the point. Basically, until I entered college for the first time, I didn’t care about information nor did I think that information was valuable.

Fast forward to today. I want to say, at least I want to think, that information is very valuable. I try to stay informed, or at least somewhat informed about what goes on around me. It is impossible to be informed about everything; however through technology today you can give it quite a run. If you use technology to gather information you have a decent shot at getting most of the headlines locally, nationally and even internationally. However is getting all the information the point? It shouldn’t be. Einstein supposedly did not bother informing himself about trivial matters (such as phone numbers) that he could look up in under 2 minutes. The truth is that we don’t need to know everything; we just need to know the right things, or have really smart friends. To add to this, the internet provides access to alot more than great information; it provides a lot of worthless information too.

So how do you gain access to only the right information? How do you even know what the right information even is, or if you are getting it? Sadly, we can’t eliminate worthless information. But we can set ourselves up to gain access to the best possible information, with minimal effort. With great information we can travel farther, learn more, be more productive. With great information we can be more successful and even help other people be more successful. Matter of fact I am attempting to make it even easier than it already is. I am researching a platform that provides great information and that helps individuals, consumers and organizations be more successful. I invite you to visit me here often as I attempt to do just that.
